7 Days has passed in Mollywood's biggest season, Summer Vacations and its time to have a look into how the movies have been performing at the Box Office.


1. 7th Day

We have a surprise entry at No.1. The film opened to a superb response, especially in main cities, beyond all expectations. 7th Day leads the Vishu releases (as of now) despite the film not belonging to mass entertainer genre, which audience used to prefer on Holidays. The last 2 thrillers Prithvi did worked on long run and WOM and didn't have an opening to boas off. 7th Day took the best opening for a Prithvi starrer.

Gross: 5.15 crores in 8 days
Superb Opening, Marching towards Super Hit

2. Ring Master

Dileep's Mass sumer vacation entertainer aimed at Ladies and Kids didn't take a grand opening, but the status has remained even through out without major drop either.

Gross: 4.58 crores in 8 days
Good Opening, Marching towards a Hit

3. Gangster

After a terrific opening the film fell badly like a pack of cards at Box Office. The film was removed from most of its stations within 6/7 days.

Gross: 3.95 crores in 9 days

4. Pauly Technique

The film took an average opening, and with average WOM future doesn't look much good for Pauly and his Techniques.

5. Ohm Shanthi Oshaana & Drishyam 

Still Continuing their blistering run in selected main centers and in many B & C class centers.

6. Maan Karate

The film got an almost free week as Summer releases were pushed to 1th due to elections. The film was bought for a meagre prize and collected many times that amount. Film performed beyond expectations and many theaters chose the film to continue for a 2nd and 3rd week.

Like 2013 it has been a slow start for Malayalam Film Industry in 2014. 2 of the biggest earners of the 1st quarter of this year are 2013 Hold Overs [meaning released in 2013, no the other HO]. So lets look at the top 5 performances at Kerala Box Office in the first 4 months of 2014.

1. Drishyam

Undoubtedly the film that grossed most in 2014 from Kerala Box Office is Drishyam. Releasing on Dec 19th, the majority of the film's total gross came this year. In Outside Kerala, Overseas markets too the film had extraordinary run in 2014.

Released on December 20, 2013 the film worked due to Fahad Faasil's impressive performance, his chemistry with Amala Paul & Sathyan Anthikkadu brand

5. Jilla

The Presence of Mohanlal even though helped the film to take the biggest opening ever for any movie in the state, the very same became the factor that pulled down the movie in the following days, as most of the Audience felt that Mohanlal was made to play a second fiddle to Vijay, only to boost up his character.

Ohm Shanthi Oshaana & 1983 - Box Office Update

The hit parade continues in Mollywood and after a disappointing start we got 2 hits in 2 weeks, both starring Nivin Pauly. '1983' which released on Jan 31st and OSO on Feb 7th have turned profitable for makers (or will pretty soon) from theatrical alone. The good trend that Drishaym and OIPK started is continuing through these films.

OSO has grossed about 6.50 crores from All India Box Office, acccording to latest reports, with Kerala contributing with about 5.5-5.75 crores and Rest Of India doing 75 lakhs plus. The film had an outstanding run outside Kerala, and is still running. The new found interest towards Malayalam film and market, thanks to Drishyam, was capitalized well by the movie as it is one of the biggest grosser ROI considering the names associated with it. Special credits also to Fox Star India, for taking such ventures and giving them a proper release with enough publicity [OSO got one of the biggest release outside Kerala] - Super Hit

'1983' even though moderately promoted had worked magic thanks to the super positive Word of Mouth. The film has grossed more than 5.5 crores so far - HIT

Yes, that's true, A Biopic on the life of Mollywood Mega Star Mammooty coming soon. It was Jude Anthany Joseph, the director of recently released 'Ohm Shanthi Oshaana', who announced the news via Facebook. It will be Nivin Pauly who will be steeping into the shoes of the acting heavy weight, which as expected has created shock, surprise and despair among people, especially fan. It is a well known fact that Nivin is a die hard Mammooty fan.

Jude also shared the short film 'Mammookka's Biography' which he shot even before he joined Vineeth in Thattathi n Marayathu. The short film was was co produced by Nivin Pauly & Aju Varghese. The inspiration to the short film was a book on 'Mammootty'. Now the same team expect to bring the big screen version to the audience worldwide, pretty soon. Let's wait and see if the project can do justice to the powerhouse of talent called Mammukka.

Ohm Shanthi Oshaana which released in 150+ screens last Friday (Feb 7th) has taken a very good opening across India, especially in Kerala. The film has got good WOM and was growing in strength day by day. The much awaited Rom-Com got one of the biggest release Outside Kerala thanks to Fox Star India & of course the all new interest to Malayalam films due to 'Drishyam' phenomenon. The film released with English subtitles which also helped the film or will help in the long run.Here is the Box Office update of OSO in its opening weekend.

 Looks like its the season of 'Romance' themed films in Mollywood -7 Sundara Rathrikal, Indian Pranayakadha, Salala Mobiles, London Bridge, 1983, and the latest offering is 'Om Shaanthi Oshaana'.

OSO narrates the incidents happening in the life of our main character Pooja through a certain time frame. Pooja is smitten in (one side) love with Giri. How Pooja herself and her love develops through times from school days, from a girl to a woman, forms the rest of the story.

If Thattathin Marayathu told the love story from boy's poin of view, here its just the opposite. The narration is similar to '1983' where cricket formed a background, here cinema and politics takes that place. Even though not comparble to either of these films OSO is still good at what it claimed to be. A breezy rOm-Com. The first half Good - funny and entertaining, 2nd half where too many things comes into picture & gets dragging, was above average.

Nazriya Nazim got a role similar to the one she played in 'Raja Rani' and she did it quite convincingly. Those who have seen the trailers and songs before could very much come into terms with the character easily, for others it might take some time to get used to this character, as its not something we are used to. Kudos to Nivin Pauly for agreeing to play the, eventhough hero, kinda side lined character. Renji Panicker as heroine's dad was a refreshing change and he was good in that too. Vineeth was impressive in a cameo. Rest of the cast were Okay.

Jude Antony Joseph has done a good job of presenting a decent entertainer with what ever resources available. Eventhough the premise might be cliched the way he shot and presented is appreciable. Script, which the director co-wrote with Midhun Manuel Thomas was entertaining but could have been better in the 2nd half where it sort of looses grip. Mentioning the nostalgia's of 90s-200s like 'Spadikam', Niram, Doordarshan, VCR-VCD etc was a clever approach. Shaan Rahman has given some good songs for the film, even better was his BG score. Cinematography was Very Good. Editing was efficient with the film running just over 2 hours.

In all OSO is a typical Rom-Com that stands out due to its narration. Its a film for all those smitten by love out there, especially in this season of love.
